Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 13, Verse 18 dives into the mystery of divine light

 शब्दार्थ

ज्योतिषाम् -सभी प्रकाशों का, अपि -भी, तत् -वह परम ब्रह्म, ज्योतिः -प्रकाश, तमसः -अंधकार / अज्ञान से परे, परम् - परम / श्रेष्ठ, उच्यते -कहा जाता है, ज्ञानम् - ज्ञान,ज्ञेयम् - जानने योग्य,  ज्ञानगम्यम् - ज्ञान द्वारा प्राप्त होने वाला,  हृदि - हृदय में, सर्वस्य - सभी प्राणियों के, विष्ठितम् - स्थित / स्थापित

भावार्थ :

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण यहाँ कहते हैं—परमात्मा ही वह प्रकाश हैं, जो सारे प्रकाशों का भी स्रोत है। जहाँ अज्ञान का अंधेरा है, वह वहाँ भी पहुँचते हैं। असली ज्ञान वही हैं, जानने लायक भी वही हैं, और उन्हें सच में तो सिर्फ ज्ञान से ही पाया जा सकता है। वह परमात्मा हर जीव के दिल में बसते हैं। 

इस श्लोक में कृष्ण परमात्मा की अनोखी महिमा समझा रहे हैं। दुनिया में चाहे सूरज हो, चाँद हो या फिर अग्नि—सबमें जो रोशनी है, उसकी जड़ परमात्मा ही हैं। वो सिर्फ बाहर के अंधकार को नहीं हटाते, हमारे मन के अंदर जो अज्ञान का अंधेरा है, उससे भी कहीं आगे हैं। इंसान सच्चाई को जानने के लिए वेद-शास्त्र पढ़ता है, साधना करता है—असल में वह परमात्मा को ही खोजना चाहता है। सच्चा ज्ञान अगर कुछ है, तो उसका मकसद भी भगवान को पाना ही है।

और सबसे बड़ी बात, परमात्मा कहीं दूर नहीं हैं; वो हर किसी के दिल में समाए हुए हैं।  

तो, ये श्लोक साफ बताता है—ईश्वर ही सारे उजालों की जड़ हैं, वो हर अज्ञान के पार हैं, उन्हें जानना असली ज्ञान का मकसद है, और वे हर जीव के हृदय में निवास करते हैं।

Transliteration English

jyotiṣām api taj jyotis tamasaḥ param ucyate ।
jñānaṁ jñeyaṁ jñāna-gamyaṁ hṛdi sarvasya viṣṭhitam ॥ 13.18 ||

In this verse, Krishna talks about the true nature of the Supreme Lord. He calls the Supreme Being the “Light of all lights.” Think of it this way—just as the sun lights up the world, the Lord is the source of all light, energy, and awareness. Everything bright or powerful draws from Him.

He stands beyond darkness, which means He’s untouched by ignorance, illusion, or any limits of the material world. When someone really feels the Supreme's presence, spiritual darkness just fades away.

The verse goes further. It says the Lord is knowledge itself, He’s the ultimate thing worth knowing, and He’s the goal you reach when you find real wisdom. All the scriptures, every spiritual practice, every path that seeks truth—they all point toward understanding the Supreme.

And finally, Krishna reminds us that the Supreme isn’t far off or distant. He lives right in the heart of every living being, always present, always witnessing, silently guiding us from within.
